Pool energy efficiency tips

There are some other actions you can take other than upgrading to an energy efficient pool pump that will lower the cost of operating your pool.  Some of these are routine maintenance and a few require some minor reconfiguring of your overall system.

In addition to installing a new energy efficient pool pump there are several things that you could possibly do to lower the amount of energy the pump needs.  These items have to do with lowering the hydraulic friction of your overall system.  Review your piping layout.  Anywhere you can replace 90 degree elbows with 45 degree elbows will help.  Straight pipes and slow turns is your overall goal.  If you are doing a major upgrade or installing new, consider doubling the size of your intake.

Besides piping, another energy consumer in the system is the filter itself.  Consider doubling its size.  This will decrease the hydraulic friction and lower the load on your pump.  Make sure you run your filter operations during low cost energy hours, generally midnight to five am in most places.  If you have a manual filter, make sure and clean it on a regular basis before it gets clogged.  Keep the intakes and drains clear of debris.

Consider purchasing a skimmer or pool cleaner as well.  This will help keep the system clear of debris and increase your enjoyment by lowering the work you have to do to the keep the pool clean.  More time for you and your family to enjoy the pool!
