An
energy efficient refrigerator is something that you cannot really
recognize as being different on the outside. By and large, the refrigerators
made today look pretty similar to those that were manufactured many
years ago. The differences, however, are noticed on the inside. Most
newer refrigerators operate in a different way from those that were
made even a few years ago.
Thanks to federal mandates, all refrigerators that are manufactured
and sold now must be at least 30 percent more efficient than the refrigerators
that were manufactured before July 2001. Even bigger savings can be
obtained by looking for the refrigerators with "Energy Star"
labels. To be worthy of this label, the energy efficient refrigerator
must be at least 10 percent more efficient than the minimum federal
mandates.
When buying a refrigerator, it may be wise to consider two different
prices that you will need to pay. The first price that you must pay
is the initial cost for the energy efficient refrigerator. The fact
is that the energy efficient units are often more expensive to buy
than those that are not as energy efficient. Price, however, should
not be the only consideration. The aspect that is truly important
to consider is cost-effectiveness.
A new energy efficient refrigerator is a better buy thanks to the
second cost associated with the refrigerator. This cost is the cost
that it takes to run the refrigerator 24-hours-a-day, 365-days-a-year
for several years. New refrigerators will include yellow EnergyGuide
labels on them that estimate the amount of energy the refrigerator
will use during the course of one year. By comparing the kilowatt
hours with the cost it will take to operate other refrigerators that
are not energy efficient, you can estimate the amount of money you
will save.
For most people, buying a new energy efficient refrigerator is a
nice investment. A refrigerator that is more than 15 years old could
actually use the same amount of energy that two newer refrigerators
would use in one year. When comparing the cost of operating a new
energy efficient refrigerator to a refrigerator that is 20 years old,
it is usual to see annual savings of around $50. Over the life of
newer refrigerators, these savings certainly add up.
Understanding what makes new refrigerators more energy efficient
is not as complicated as one might think. One of the aspects of a
new energy efficient refrigerator that makes it a worthwhile purchase
is the insulation. Heavy doors that create tight seals are one of
the trademarks of energy efficiency.
Some other things you can do to make sure your refrigerator is operating
at its maximum efficiency levels is to minimize frost build-up, move
it out of the sun or away from the dishwasher or oven, and keep your
freezer full.
Those who are looking into making their home more energy efficient
should consider starting out in the kitchen. Although somewhat expensive,
an energy efficient refrigerator still can cost much less than other
things people have installed in their homes in an effort to save energy.
