Creating
an energy efficient office is something that can greatly reduce the
costs associated with operating a home office. One of the biggest
advantages associated with doing this is the fact that there is not
normally a lot that a person needs to do to make his or her home office
more efficient.
Simply keeping in mind some of the following tips can help a person
maintain his or her home office so that it continues to be functional,
but does not change the way work is performed.
• Sleep is good – Just as taking a nap helps you save
energy, allowing your office equipment the opportunity to sleep does
the same thing. Remember to activate the "sleep" features
on your computers and copiers to cut energy costs. Allowing your equipment
to sleep will save energy costs, but it will also improve the longevity
of your equipment.
• Use lights wisely – Everybody knows that a good way
to save on energy costs is to only turn on the lights when you need
them. In addition to this, there are also other ways to create an
energy efficient office when it comes to lights and lighting. One
of the things that those who are seeking energy efficiency do is to
install compact fluorescent bulbs. These bulbs, otherwise known as
CFLs, use up to 75 percent less energy than halogen or incandescent
bulbs.
• Look for the "Energy Star" label – The "Energy
Star" label makes it easier for consumers to find energy efficient
office equipment. Choosing computers, printers, scanners, copiers,
cordless phones, and air conditioners with these labels could take
a significant chunk from your monthly electricity bill.
• Let items rest – There are certain pieces of office
equipment that seem to be always on. This includes TVs, VCRs, DVD
players, and electric clocks. Even when they are turned off, these
appliances use up energy to keep display lights lit. Those DVD players
and VCRs that include the "Energy Star" label use less energy
when they are turned "off."
• Don't be afraid of the sun – During the colder months
of the year, take advantage of the sunshine in your office as much
as you can. Large windows will allow you to add more heat to the office
as long as you keep the blinds or drapes open when it is warm. Some
of this heat can be retained overnight by closing the blinds when
the sun goes down. This is another way to create a more energy efficient
office.
Some of these tips are more expensive and will take more resources
than others. It is important to remember that one of the main reasons
to create an energy efficient office is to save money. Be wise in
the purchases you make. New equipment can have large initial costs
associated with them, but if you keep the larger idea in mind, this
will save you money in the long run.
