A good tubular skylight will have a high impact dome of acrylic or similar material that is UV resistant for long life. As this will be the most visible component of the skylight outside your home make sure the dome is low profile for aesthetic reasons. The dome should be connected to the tube by means of a collar that can expand and contract effectively as the temperature changes. The dome being connected to the flashing is not a good choice. The best flashing will be seamless and designed so that elbows are not necessary in the application. Elbows will reduce the light transmitted.
The skylight should be bug and dust proof in addition to water tight. A built in condensation system is also preferable for long life and high light transmission. The flashing should be seamless and of high quality. The higher the reflectivity of the light pipe the better the efficiency of the skylight. You should look for one with a reflectivity of 96% or better. Some models, in addition to being Energy Star rated, are also hurricane tested and approved. If you live in a hurricane area you should choose one of these types.
In contrast to the dome, the trim ring and diffuser is what you see inside your home. It should be of high quality for superior aesthetics. A slightly rounded diffuser will diffuse the light farther into the room than a flat diffuser. The ability to snap off the diffuser for ease of cleaning is an added bonus.
