Outdoor ceiling fans need some special consideration. They will be operating in a harsher environment than most indoor ceiling fans. Often they will be working in more humidity, with higher temperatures and dustier conditions.
Therefore, you should give consideration to the following before purchasing an outdoor ceiling fan. The main considerations are the motor rating and UL listing. Even if you don’t choose an Energy Star rated product, you can still raise the comfort level in your outdoor living space with a properly chosen and installed outdoor fan.
Motor ratings breakdown into three main categories: performance grade, medium grade and moderate or economy grade. For long life, a performance grade fan is the better choice. A medium grade motor can perform outdoors but due to the harsher environments, an economy grade fan should be avoided if possible.
UL listed ceiling fans with a wet or damp ratings are also important for outdoor ceiling fans. If the fan will be operated in high humidity or where water could be possible this is an added quality that will improve the life of your fan.
